UCSF | COVID-19: Virology, Immunology and Pathology

UCSF Distinguished Professor and Chair of the Department of Laboratory Medicine, Clifford Lowell, MD, PhD, reviews the latest research and information about COVID-19 at our latest ImmunoX Journal Club (April 2, 2020). The Bakar ImmunoX Initiative is an ambitious, first-in-class program at UCSF that uses social engineering, state-of-the-art technologies and infrastructure, and a unique data sharing model to support a community of researchers and clinicians as they work toward solutions together. Corrections to the information shared in this video:

In the video, it was suggested that bird flu, which has a high case fatality rate, was the cause of the 1918 pandemic. In fact, it was the Spanish flu, with a case fatality rate near the current pandemic, that was the problem in 1918. Bird flu (H5N1) was responsible for the big bird die off (and killing of poultry) around 1998.

Also, the statement that 15% of infections are asymptomatic is probably too low. A closer number might be 25%, with Dr. Fauci is suggesting as much as 50%. Additionally, the infectious disease community at UCSF stated that the study of the cruise ship people suggested a 40% asymptomatic carrier rate.

Journal Club
